What are fleas and what do they look like?
Fleas are a parasite, which means they feed on blood. Although they can live on a number of animals, including dogs, hedgehogs and foxes, the two types of flea most likely to be encounted in the UK are the cat flea (Ctenocephalides felis) and the bird flea (Ceratophyllus gallinae). The two most common characteristic are their ability to jump and bite. People often report noticing bites around their ankles and lower legs if in contact with fleas, this can be from a pet at home, from within a workplace, or having recently moved into a home previously occupied by an animal. They can often be difficult to spot as adults measure only 2-3mm in length. They have flat bodies and are red to brown in colour.
As well as the fleas causing irritation and harm to your pet, their eggs can also cause irritation. They are often referred to as 'flea dust' by vets and can be present even after treatment such as a flea spray has been used to eradicate the fleas. After treatment has occured the first time a handy tip is to use a fine-toothed comb on your pet to get rid of most of the flea-dust. Also regularly cleaning the home will rid your home of flea carcasses.
