While many businesses including shops, bars, restaurants and other food premises are often affected by infestations of house flies, fruit flies, drain flies and other flying insects, another very common pest fly is the cluster fly.

What are cluster flies?
Cluster Flies (Pollenia rudis), also referred to as loft flies or attic flies, are a pest typically associated with rural locations. They live outside during the summer months but invade homes and lofts in their hundreds and sometimes thousands during the autumn, winter and spring. The cluster fly typically measures 6-10mm in length and has a dark grey to olive thorax.

During the summer months and on sunny days cluster flies can often be found outdoors congregating on posts, walls and fences. Cluster flies migrate indoors in the autumn and winter months, with many people reporting large numbers in their loft or around windows on lower level floors. As mentioned, the purpose of this invasion is purely to hibernate and not to breed or lay eggs. During the hibernation period and cooler months, they tend to be sluggish in flight, and often appear almost dead when discovered on floors and window sills in homes, particularly on cooler days. However, when the sun comes out heating rooms, lofts, and roof spaces they occupy, this can often awaken them, triggering activity.

As well as finding flies in loft spaces, homes with sash windows can also suffer with infestations in living rooms and bedrooms as the design of the window mechanism can provide easy access. Downlights in ceilings can also provide access to bedrooms, as they will travel down from lofts, emerging through surrounding gaps. Velux window are another favoured spot where they are likely to congregate.

Cluster flies are almost impossible to eradicate. As they breed outdoors during the summer, even if you kill all the flies in your loft during a season, chances are that another batch will migrate into your home again next year. It is this cycle which unfortunately means many people suffer with infestations year on year, and season after season. The only real solution to this is to carry out periodical cluster fly treatment using smoke bombs or Foggers as and when you notice activity.

What is the most effective cluster fly treatment?
The best method of cluster fly treatment and fastest route to eradication is firstly to kill off and flush out any flies from within a loft, attic or roof space. This is best achieved by using either our Pest Expert Formula 'P' Smoke Bombs or Foggers both of which deliver a rapid knockdown of cluster flies, immediately clearing an infestation from a loft or roof space.

However, as neither smoke bombs nor Foggers offer any ongoing protection, once fumigation has been carried out, cluster fly control can be maintained by applying one of our residual insecticides such as Pest Expert Formula 'C' Cluster Fly Killer Spray and Pest Expert Formula 'P' Cluster Fly Powder to window frames, roof timbers and any other alighting surfaces.

This creates an effective cluster fly control to hopefully prevent further infestations, although it is recommended to regularly check potential infestation sites and where necessary re-apply the cluster fly killer or the cluster fly treatment that you are using. It's a small measure to prevent having to fumigate your loft every year.
