Mouse Plague Hits Prisons
The mouse plague sweeping Australia has forced the evacuation of a prison while gnawed electrical wiring is repaired and they clear dad and decaying mice from walls and ceilings.
Around 420 inmates and 200 staff have been transferred from the Wellington Correctional Centre in rural New South Wales to other prisons in the region for the next 10 days while cleaning and repairs take place.
‘The health, safety and wellbeing of staff and inmates is our No. 1 priority so it’s important for us to act now to carry out the vital remediation work.’ Corrective Services Commissioner Peter Severin said.
Remediation work at the prison will include investigating ways in which to protect the prison facility from any future mice plagues, which are a phenomenon largely unique to Australia.
